Photography: How to make it your own

web. cropped. Bridge. Bright whites

So, life threw me a curveball last week. My hard drive crashed (GASP)! All was not lost…everything was backed up on an external hard drive. After ordering a new hard drive and with the help of a very generous techy friend, I am back up and running without so much as a single file or document out of place. In the week that my laptop was out of commission, however, I took advantage of being offline and spent hours upon hours with my camera. With the beautiful summer season upon us, vacations to be enjoyed, graduations, weddings, new babies and breathtaking vistas all around, I thought it would be a great time to share some photography tips about putting your own twist on creating memorable images. These days just about everyone functions as a photographerwhether you use an iPhone or a more sophisticated camera. All you need are a few good tips and you’ll be well on your way to creating unforgettable images that you love! Continue reading…

Friday Favorites

Late May in western North Carolina is part summer – part blackberry winter. The days are getting longer, afternoons warmer, gardens spilling over with blooms but the evenings can still be quite cool. (Insert a shout out to my friend and fellow blogger, Julie Wunder, of Running in a Skirt. Her Fashion Friday post this morning got me thinking…)  With Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, I thought it would be a great time to dedicate my Friday Favorites to 10 must-have summer essentials. Grab a seat and let’s get ready to play! Continue reading…

One of my favorite contemporary photographers, Annie Leibovitz, once said “A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people.” As a writer and photographer myself, I love falling in love with the world around me. Check out this list of Friday Favorites as I pay homage to the people, places and actions that inspired me most this week. Take a peak, I promise you’ll fall in love too! Continue reading…

The New Entrepreneur

IMG_9081(1)

“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.” —John D. Rockefeller A poster with this quote popped up in my Instagram feed this week. Like most things do, this poetic thought showed up at a time when I most needed to hear it. I’ve been in a serious period of reclamation for some months now. Reclaiming control over my time, my earning potential, career, my business(es), relationships, my garden, my closet, romance, parenting teenagers, weeds (literal and figurative), reclaiming creativity, happiness, opportunity, fitness, wellbeing, reclaiming professional and personal goals, reclaiming balance over stress and schedule demands. PHEW. That felt really good to say out loud and with gusto! Join me this week as I discuss the new entrepreneur and tips to break free from that old outdated handbook for what “work” is supposed to look like. Continue reading…

Mojo Monday

(PC Tina Masciarelli) Haywood Community College, campus arboreatum & dahlia garden. Mill Pond 1

The second installment of my Mojo Monday series is inspired by On Being and a recent blog post about sacred texts published in celebration of Earth Day. John Muir wrote, “When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.” This felt like a really big long magnificent breaking storm of a week where stars were colliding rather than shining together. Big highs (Earth Day 2016) and heartbreaking lows (death of a music legend, x2). This week I’m reflecting on places to play and places to pray—and why we need them both.

Mojo Monday

“We teach each other how to live” —from poet Anne Michaels, The Winter Vault. That’s how my horoscope started this week. It went on to explain how living like a “curious student” is our sacred duty and the best gift we can give ourselves. The prophetic blurb challenged me to focus attention on the assumption that everyone we meet and every encounter offers rich learning experiences, whether we recognize them at the time or not. I thought creating a Mojo Monday post series would be a great response to honor the gift of this powerful signpost, to acknowledge gratitude for the people and places that added a little magic to my world over the last seven days and open the door for more gratitude and abundance in the coming week. I hope this series inspires the same in you. Beauty exists everywhere if we just pause long enough to notice. Continue reading…
